Heartbreaking Story: A ten-year-old boy, Abdur, was hospitalised due to severe neglect despite numerous warnings from his school. This “delightful” child was suffering from anaemia and scurvy, painful conditions that resulted in him losing four teeth and struggling to walk. His school raised concerns a shocking 38 times, noting his lunchbox often contained only mouldy bread and water.

Despite these reports, social services were actually reducing his care plan instead of addressing his needs. Abdur’s mother, with a history of drug addiction, and stepfather dismissed his clear signs of distress. This poor boy was even forced to walk home from a doctor’s appointment in excruciating pain.
In a desperate and heartbreaking bid for help, Abdur flagged down a stranger’s car for a lift, showing just how dire his situation had become. It wasn’t until a school nurse intervened that he received the necessary medical attention.

Oldham Council has admitted to a shocking failure in its duty to protect Abdur, with a recent report highlighting missed opportunities and a lack of effective coordination between agencies. Councillor Shaid Mushtaq expressed deep regret over the handling of Abdur’s case, stating no child should endure such pain and trauma.

In response, the council has made changes to ensure earlier risk identification and stronger agency coordination, emphasising the importance of listening to children’s voices. The safeguarding system is under a revamp to prevent future tragedies.
This story is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and taking action when a child’s wellbeing is at risk. Let’s hope these changes bring about the necessary protection every child deserves. Stay aware, stay informed, and let’s ensure no child goes unheard or unnoticed. 💔🛡️ #ChildSafety #ProtectOurChildren #NeverAgain
