A 12-year-old boy in Swindon ended up in hospital after consuming over 50 pieces of Tyson Fury’s ‘Furocity’ caffeine gum in a single day! 😱 Oliver Wood, who thought he was chewing regular gum, unknowingly ingested over 2,000mg of caffeine – imagine 20 cups of coffee or 25 cans of Red Bull! 🚑
After experiencing chest pains and feeling jittery, Oliver confessed to his mum, Anne-Marie Willis, and was rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, after medical attention and some tense moments, he was discharged safely when his heart rate stabilised.
Anne-Marie is speaking out to alert other parents about the potential dangers of caffeine-infused products that are accessible to kids – even when they don’t realise what they’re buying. She’s urging for heightened awareness and responsibility when selling such products, especially since there are no legal restrictions preventing children from purchasing them. 🛑
Oliver bought the gum during a day out with friends at Farmfoods, bagging a four-pack deal for just £1. The packaging does warn against use by children, but Anne-Marie stresses that these warnings aren’t enough, pointing out, “You wouldn’t sell a 12-year-old 23 Red Bulls, would you?”
The family received a £10 voucher from Farmfoods as a goodwill gesture, but Anne-Marie insists this issue is bigger than just one incident. She’s reached out to the Food Standards Agency and her MP to push for change, so that no other child has to be rushed to the hospital like Oliver.
