TV star Holly Willoughby can breathe a little easier as Gavin Plumb, the man who shockingly plotted to kidnap, rape, and murder her, has lost his appeal against a life sentence. Plumb, a 38-year-old security guard, received a minimum 16-year life sentence after being convicted of these horrific plans, which were described by the court as “more than mere fantasy.”

During the trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, chilling details emerged about Plumb’s intentions. He was discovered with an “abduction kit” including chloroform and cable ties. He’d even discussed ambushing Holly at her home and taking time off work for the sinister plot. Though Plumb argued these were fantasy chats, Mr Justice Murray found his plans particularly sadistic and a real threat to Holly’s safety.

It was an undercover operation that brought Plumb’s dark plans to light. An officer from Minnesota, USA, infiltrated a disturbing online group called Abduct Lovers. Posing as “David Nelson,” the officer learned of Plumb’s deadly seriousness, prompting collaboration with the FBI and UK police, who arrested Plumb in October 2023.
The statement from prosecutor Alison Morgan KC highlighted the “catastrophic impact” on Holly, who bravely waived her right to anonymity related to the case. The Court of Appeal firmly supported the original life sentence, with Lord Justice Edis stating Plumb remains a dangerous offender. The chilling appeal was decisively dismissed, signalling a triumph for justice and a relieved sigh for Holly.
