Tragedy struck at Frankston Beach, Melbourne, as rough weather claimed the lives of two men, including a British national. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Wednesday when the unforgiving 130km/h winds caused a 36-year-old surfer’s board to snap. A 43-year-old friend bravely dove in to help but sadly, neither could be saved despite the best efforts of a police helicopter crew. Reports suggest the surfer had minimal experience, which added to the peril in the wild conditions.

Victoria Police’s Inspector Melissa Nixon cautioned against venturing into the ocean during such treacherous weather, highlighting the risks not only to oneself but also to potential rescuers. An experienced police operator, part of the rescue mission, suffered minor injuries and was hospitalised.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a solemn reminder: no wave is worth risking lives. Safety first, always.
