A distressing case of animal neglect has emerged from Cardiff, leaving animal lovers appalled. A woman has been banned from keeping animals for three years after RSPCA inspectors discovered her home filled with starving pets living in unsanitary conditions.

When Inspector Emma Smith visited Chloe Britton’s residence, she found Woody, a dachshund, and Ginge, a cat, both in a dire state of emaciation. The property was covered in faeces, with the stench so overpowering it burned the inspector’s eyes and nose. Woody was visibly skeletal, every bone outlined, and his coat was thinning. With no food available, the animals were so desperate that Inspector Smith witnessed one of the dogs eating faeces.

Britton had claimed she regularly visited the house despite living elsewhere, but her admissions in court told a different story. When the inspector revisited months later, Ginge, the cat, was found crying in distress on the doorstep, having lost even more weight. Both animals were taken by the RSPCA for urgent care, and thankfully, Woody and Ginge began to recover, gaining weight in the charity’s care.

In court, Britton pleaded guilty under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, citing personal struggles, including learning difficulties and fear of domestic violence, as factors in her neglect. The court sentenced her to a 12-month community order with rehabilitation and imposed fines.
Fortunately, there’s a silver lining, as these resilient pets have been rehomed and are now thriving in loving environments. Inspector Smith expressed gratitude for the public’s prompt reporting, which enabled timely intervention to save these animals from further suffering.
Let this story be a reminder to remain vigilant and report signs of neglect. Together, we can continue to support the well-being of animals in our communities. 🐾❤️
