Jamaica has been reeling after Melissa became one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the island, tragically claiming 19 lives and forcing thousands into shelters. Among the chaos, approximately 8,000 Brits found themselves amidst the destruction, especially in beloved tourist hotspots like Montego Bay.

While most Brits are being advised to catch commercial flights if possible, the government has organised a handful of chartered flights to assist those in need. In addition to this, the UK has stepped up to provide £7.5 million in humanitarian aid. This includes essential shelter kits and solar-powered lanterns for those still in darkness. The donations will also match contributions made to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has emphasised Britain’s commitment to supporting Jamaica, stating that the UK is boosting funding to ensure vital supplies reach those desperate for assistance.

Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm with terrifying winds reaching 185 mph, didn’t stop at Jamaica. It also struck nearby Haiti, where floods took the lives of at least 30 people. Both nations are in our thoughts as they begin the journey to recovery.

Stay safe, everyone. Let’s keep sending our thoughts and support to those affected! šŸ™ā¤ļø
