Heads up, folks! Merthyr Tydfil is facing a hefty fine of about £292,000 if they don’t hit the Welsh Government’s 70% recycling target. Currently sitting at 66.24%, they’re close but not quite there, with food waste recycling stagnant at 50%. The council’s got big plans to crank things up a notch and not only meet but exceed these targets by 2028.

The focus? Reducing the amount of recyclable and food waste in regular bins and boosting public participation through educational campaigns. There’s also a push to embrace circular economy principles and improve commercial and school recycling.

A recent public consultation showed strong backing for initiatives like kerbside collection of plastic film, nappies, and small electronics. But, concerns about waste collection hours and post-collection cleanliness were also raised. With a new waste strategy on the horizon, Merthyr Tydfil aims to ramp up both awareness and accessibility to meet recycling goals.
What do you think about these recycling efforts? Is Merthyr Tydfil on the right track, or does more need to be done? Let’s get the conversation started! ♻️💬 #Recycling #MerthyrTydfil #Sustainability
