Beware of rogue traders! John Junior Janes and his partner in crime, Steven Linsey, have been jailed after conning vulnerable people out of over £60,000. The duo delivered shoddy work at inflated prices and used intimidation to silence their victims. Janes, from Wentloog Road, Cardiff, was sentenced to three years and nine months, while Linsey received nine months for his role.

Their dirty tricks included posing under fake company names, bullying customers into paying large sums upfront, and making wild threats like “I will come around and smash your house in” to scare off complaints. Their dodgy dealings focused on home improvement scams—inadequate driveways, patios, and gardens were their MO.

The investigation, led by Shared Regulatory Services, revealed Linsey even tried bribing victims to withdraw their complaints, which added another crime to the rap sheet: attempting to pervert the course of justice. Cardiff Council’s Councillor Norma Mackie highlighted the emotional and financial toll on the victims, many of whom were vulnerable due to age, mental health issues, or disabilities. It’s heart-breaking to learn that one victim suffered a stroke, speculated to be linked to the stress caused by Janes.
Janes has been ordered to repay £42,960 and cover the court costs of £28,917.50, failing which he faces more time behind bars. Linsey, due to time already served, is now free but remains under supervision.
This serves as a stern warning: always check the credentials of traders before letting them do work on your property. Let’s hope this case brings some relief and justice to those affected. Stay informed and vigilant!
