A couple from Newport recently found themselves on the receiving end of shocking messages after posting a review about their experience at a local pub. Naomi and Leanne Green visited the newly reopened Waterloo Inn in Nash, Newport, on November 2nd. After tasting their meals, they decided they weren’t impressed and got a refund. On their way to another eatery, Leanne, who has quite a following on Facebook, shared a video detailing their experience, mentioning that the pickled vegetables were just not to their taste.

Everything took a turn when the pub’s chef saw the post and sent a string of abusive messages filled with homophobic remarks. Comments like “You only get likes because you’re gay” and referring to Naomi in derogatory terms shocked both Naomi and Leanne. Naomi expressed her disbelief over the whole situation and emphasised that while she didn’t enjoy the veg, she wasn’t out to damage a local business’ reputation.

The next day, the chef reached out with an apology and the pub issued a statement saying they regret any offence caused and the views expressed did not reflect the pub’s values of inclusivity and respect. They also promised to handle the situation privately.

Meanwhile, Gwent Police have joined the conversation, confirming they are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime.
It’s a reminder of the power of words and the importance of maintaining respect and civility, even in the digital space. The response from the pub aims to emphasise a commitment to good food and a welcoming atmosphere for all.
