📢 Village Pub’s Beloved ‘Dog House’ Must Be Torn Down! 😮🍻

In a surprising turn of events, the iconic outdoor seating area known as the ‘dog house’ at the Millers Arms in Mathern, near Chepstow, is set to be dismantled. This follows a failed appeal against the council’s decision to refuse retrospective planning permission for the shed, erected in a conservation area.
Landlord Shaun Barnsley passionately defended the structure, calling it “a symbol of community spirit and togetherness.” The local gem had not only sheltered pub patrons but also served as a gathering spot for charities and community groups, providing a “serene space” for all. Local supporters, ranging from the Chepstow Cycling Club to the Bulwark Girl Guides—who enjoyed free chips and curry sauce during their activity day—backed the fight to keep it standing.

Barnsley’s appeal highlighted a petition and numerous supportive letters, making the case that the shed was not out of place as claimed. Despite this, independent inspector Julie de-Courcey dismissed the appeal, stressing that her role was not to revisit planning merits or grievances about Monmouthshire Council’s handling of the case.
The ‘dog house’, originally painted with a vibrant hue but now weathered to match the Millers Arms, has been at the heart of many fond memories. Although the appeal was strong, the final decision means the structure must be removed within three months, according to the council’s enforcement notice.
It’s a community loss, but the spirit of the village pub will continue to thrive. Share your favourite memories or thoughts about this beloved spot in the comments below! 🐾❤️
