Exciting news is unfolding in Barry, where plans are underway for a new health and social care hub as part of a broader town regeneration initiative. The Vale of Glamorgan Council has given the green light to expand the town centre’s western gateway scheme, incorporating a hub catering primarily to older people, alongside affordable housing at Gladstone Road Bridge site.

This shift in plans comes after a significant funding gap was identified in the original clinic proposal, prompting a creative partnership between Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and the council. This collaboration aims to unlock Welsh Government funding, but further detailed planning is essential.

Back in June 2021, hopes were high as the initial vision for the redevelopment included creating 46 affordable homes and new premises for health services. However, with rising costs and site constraints, adjustments had to be made. Now, phase one focuses on delivering viable housing solutions, but the true highlight is the potential for an integrated health and social care hub, poised to enhance the quality of life for Barry residents.

Phase two of the project will tackle the old Broad Street clinic site, paving the way for 34 additional affordable homes. While the aging clinic has long been considered an eyesore by locals, its transformation promises to revitalize the area.
Phase three aims to improve public spaces and encourage active travel, creating a more vibrant community environment.
Despite financial hurdles, the commitment to a comprehensive health and social care facility remains firm. It’s a challenging road, but by persisting with this ambitious vision, the council and health board are determined to deliver a project that truly meets the needs of Barry’s community. Keep an eye on this space for more updates on this significant transformation!
