Discover the Hidden Gems of Cardiff’s Railway Past 🚂✨

Did you know Cardiff was once a hub of bustling railway stations, each with its own unique story? While our current network is expanding, the city was previously home to many more stations, long since forgotten. Here’s a peek into some of Cardiff’s lost railway history:

1. **Adam Street**: Opened in 1858, it closed to passengers by 1871, transitioning to a goods station until 1966. Short-lived yet pivotal in its time!
2. **Cardiff Crockherbtown**: The first public station on the Taff Vale Railway, opened back in 1841. Despite serving 800,000 passengers a year, it was later demolished in 1989.
3. **Cefn Onn Halt**: Nestled between Cardiff and Rhymney, it opened in 1871 and closed in 1986 due to safety issues near a tunnel entrance.
4. **Clarence Road**: This station started with freight in 1882, only welcoming passengers in 1923 before closing in 1964.
5. **Creigiau**: Shutting in 1962, but might be back! There’s ongoing exploration for reopening it as part of the South Wales Metro.
6. **Ely Main Line**: From serving over 400,000 passengers annually to closing in 1963, this station was crucial for both passengers and freight.
7. **Roath**: Operating from 1899 to 1917, it’s located in Splott despite the name suggesting otherwise. Remnants of its past still linger.
8. **St Fagans**: Known for heavy freight traffic, it closed in 1962 despite a past proposal for renovation.
9. **Tongwynlais**: Opened in 1911 and closed just two decades later, swallowed by modern infrastructure.
