🚧 Exciting News for Monmouth Residents! 🚧

The iconic Inglis Bridge in Monmouth might soon be going on a little adventure! 🏗️ The only bridge of its kind still welcoming the public, this Grade II-listed marvel is set for some TLC. Closed to vehicles since 2018, residents have long awaited its grand return to full service.

To kick off the refurbishment, plans have been submitted to lift the entire bridge off its supports and temporarily place it in a nearby field for essential repairs. This ambitious project involves replacing the timber deck, repairing steelwork, giving it a fresh coat of paint, and even removing some debris. 🌳 While some nearby trees will need to be pruned or felled, all permissions are already in place. Plus, a new wooden fence and lockable gates will be fitted, along with updated signage, ensuring the bridge stays as beautiful and functional as ever.
Built in 1931 by the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, this bridge isn’t just a piece of infrastructure; it’s a slice of history, helping connect the town to the military camp at Vauxhall. Its design, credited to Sir Charles Edward Inglis, played a vital role during WWI, marking a significant chapter in military engineering.
Though it’s been a while since vehicles crossed it, pedestrians and cyclists have found it indispensable until its closure. But fear not, Monmouthshire’s council and the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association are on the case!
So, get ready to witness a piece of history gently lifted and cared for, ready to serve generations to come once more. 🌉✨
