🚦 Frustration Grows Over Wales’ “Most Dangerous Junction” 🚦

Residents near the notorious A40 junction at the Raglan Bypass have been holding their breath for years, waiting for promised safety improvements to come to life. Dubbed Wales’ ‘most dangerous junction,’ this spot has seen countless accidents, some tragically fatal, prompting a sense of urgency among locals for action to be taken.

Efforts to curb the peril, including banning risky right-hand turns across the dual carriageway, were initially given the green light back in 2022. But delays involving Monmouthshire County Council and other stakeholders like the Welsh Government and cycling organisation Sustrans have left the community impatient.
Locals are on edge as they navigate the tricky stretch, where vehicles have to cross the busy road to reach destinations like Mitchel Troy and Dingestow. Despite reducing the speed limit from 70mph to 50mph temporarily, safety concerns remain unchecked. What adds to the danger is the lack of sufficient space in the central reservations, leaving cars perilously overhanging into traffic as they wait to turn.
The council acknowledges the complexities involved, with Labour cabinet member Cllr Catrin Maby citing in-depth consultations and design assessments to ensure the changes won’t inadvertently affect other road users, including cyclists. While “quick wins” were identified in a road safety report last June, bureaucratic hurdles have hampered swift action.
Cllr Richard John, voicing the collective frustration, stressed on the urgency at a recent council meeting, reflecting residents’ sentiments who feel sidelined. Meanwhile, Raglan Community Council has also expressed impatience, urging decision-makers to step up the pace.
✨ Let’s hope 2026 brings the necessary changes that not only ease the community’s worries but also enhance road safety for all users. Stay tuned for updates in the new year. ✨
