Feeling under the weather already this winter? 😷 You’re not alone! As we dive into cold and flu season, GP Dr Sophie Newton has shared a simple yet effective way to boost our immune system. Spoiler alert: It’s all about embracing those extra zzz’s!

Dr Newton took to TikTok to reveal that good sleep could be our best defence against those persistent winter bugs. In a fascinating study, participants exposed to the cold virus were significantly less likely to fall ill if they slept for eight hours or more compared to those who skimped on shut-eye.

It’s not just quantity that counts – quality matters too. People experiencing broken sleep were up to five and a half times more likely to develop symptoms! So, while your immune system works overtime during sleep producing vital cells and antibodies, skimping on rest may leave you vulnerable.
So, what’s the game plan for snooze success? Aim for 15 to 30 minutes more sleep each night. Establish a calming bedtime routine, dim the lights, banish gadgets, and keep the bedroom cool. These simple tweaks not only fend off colds but also enhance mental health and memory. 🛌💤
And while we’re on the topic of sleep, one tip from Dr Suraj Kukadia: avoid sleeping on your stomach. It could lead to costochondritis, a painful inflammation where ribs meet the breastbone. Ouch!
Here’s to a healthier, happier winter season! 💪✨ Sleep well and stay well!
