Holiday Swimmer Recounts Unprecedented Peril in Battling Elements, Two Individuals Still Unaccounted for Following Festive Swim

A Christmas Day swim at Budleigh Salterton took a terrifying turn when two men went missing amid some of the worst conditions ever seen. The event, meant to be a festive tradition, quickly became a rescue operation as 6ft waves and 65mph winds created chaos. Despite the brave efforts of rescuers and lifeboats, the two swimmers are still unaccounted for.

Mike Brown, who was pulled to safety, described the sea conditions as “much worse than normal,” admitting it was a mistake to go in. “I owe my life to the two local heroes who risked everything to save me,” Mike recalled, expressing his desire to thank his rescuers personally for their selfless bravery.

The lost swimmers include Matthew Upham, a beloved local antiques dealer, who was possibly swept away while being helped by another man in his 40s. Their families have been left devastated, describing Matthew as “deeply loved.”
