When you think of a hospice, what comes to mind? For many of us, it evokes thoughts of sadness and endings. But after visiting a Marie Curie Hospice, my view has completely changed!

Located in beautiful Penarth, this hospice is a beacon of support for everyone facing life-limiting illnesses, from cancer to dementia. And it’s not just for patients. Families and loved ones receive care and attention too, both before and after the end.

What struck me the most was the vibrant community spirit within the hospice. It’s welcoming to anyone – local running groups, neighbours, or simply those in need of a warm cuppa and a chat. It’s more like a lively community centre than a solemn hospital.

The staff, like Kath Guerico, are incredible. After transitioning from the NHS, Kath found a space where she could truly care for others without the daily stresses of a typical hospital. She says, “People come here to live the last of what time they have left. We’re all about the little things that make someone feel cared for.”

Every gesture, from painting nails to organising festive events, is designed to create memories. And believe it or not, there’s a lot of laughter here. Kath shares stories of how her colleagues, like the ever-singing Nicky from housekeeping, brighten the place with joy.

Marie Curie in Penarth is also home to the brilliant Mad Men’s Café, a group providing support to men through shared experiences – proving yet again that these hospices are spaces of connection and not just places of farewells.

Anne Edwards, who runs the wellbeing hub, emphasises starting palliative care early in one’s journey. The hospice offers support that goes beyond medical needs, focusing on music, crafts, and social activities. It’s all about understanding what truly matters to each individual.

In sum, this hospice isn’t just a place people come to in the final stages of life. It’s about living fully, connecting with community, and ensuring no one has to go through their journey alone. 🕊️💛
