Beloved Eatery Forced to Close Doors as Operating Costs Skyrocket by Over 200%

A beloved spot in Pembroke Dock, Randall’s Restaurant, has closed its doors for the final time after business rates skyrocketed. Known for its delightful French and British cuisine, Randall’s was a favourite with locals and boasted glowing reviews, with both Google and Facebook ratings at an impressive 4.8 stars.

Despite the restaurant’s success and loyal clientele, the burden of rising costs became unbearable. Owner Natalie Newton, who has run the Dolphin Hotel — home to Randall’s — since 2018, revealed the devastating news that rates are set to jump from £10,000 to £33,000. She calls it “heartbreaking,” saying, “Our successful little business has been attacked by our leaders.”

Natalie and her fiancé, head chef Ben Randall, poured their heart and soul into creating a dining haven, building a loyal customer base over four years. Now, sadly, 11 dedicated staff members face unemployment. “They’re like family to us,” Natalie shared, expressing deep sorrow over the impact of the closure.

For Natalie, the tipping point was receiving confirmation of the new rates starting in April. Despite ongoing pressures like soaring energy bills and increased costs for essentials, she insists, “We refused to sink in these challenging times, but this was the only way forward.”

The restaurant’s closure has left the community heartbroken. On Christmas Day, the final day of service, customers arrived with cards and gifts, showing their appreciation for the cherished local gem. With plans to appeal the rates increase, Natalie remains sceptical about the outcome but feels compelled to try.

A Welsh Government spokesperson stated that revaluations were intended to bring fairness to the system, though many businesses, like Randall’s, are feeling the pinch. “I think there are going to be ghost towns everywhere,” warns Natalie, highlighting the broader impact of these financial pressures on small businesses.
