🚗👓 New Driving Tests for Over 70s – A Step Towards Safer Roads! 👓🚗

Exciting news for older drivers! The Department for Transport is planning to introduce mandatory eye tests for drivers over 70, and experts are all for it. Did you know that the chances of being involved in a car accident increase once you hit that age? It’s true, says AA president Edmund King, who highlights the importance of regular eyesight checks.

Starting from Wednesday, the government will be consulting on potential eye and cognitive tests as part of a broader road safety strategy. This strategy isn’t just about rules—it’s about protecting the mobility and independence of our beloved senior drivers while keeping roads safe for everyone.
Eye tests are free for everyone over 60, and it’s recommended to get checked every two years. Besides, these tests might spot other health issues early on. Keeping our roads safe is the goal, with a bold target to cut down on road deaths and serious injuries by 65% by 2035. Shocking stats reveal that in 2024, about 24% of drivers involved in fatal accidents were 70 or older.
Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood stressed that driving is key to many older people’s independence, but safety can’t be ignored. She assures that the new strategy aims to balance personal freedom with vital safety measures.
Additional plans may involve doubling fines for uninsured drivers to £600, potentially making the roads safer and deterring risky behaviours.
Stay tuned for these upcoming changes and feel free to share your thoughts! 🚦🛣️
