Our hearts are heavy as Cornwall remembers the loss of a beloved member of its community. James Southey, affectionately known as the ‘gentle giant’, tragically passed away during Storm Goretti when a tree fell on his caravan. With winds reaching over 100mph, the storm left a path of devastation, including the heartbreaking loss of James.

At 50, James was cherished for his kindness and his willingness to lend a hand. His sister shared on Facebook, “Absolutely devastated to share the tragic news of my brother’s passing. He was a gentle giant who would do anything for anyone. We will miss him dearly.”

People from all around have expressed their grief and shared fond memories. Caroline Blatter said, “So sad to hear this, utterly gutted. James was such a gentle kind family man, with a lot of love to share. How missed he will be.” Others like Andy Bennett and Belinda Moore echoed these sentiments, recognising his affectionate nature and the impact he had on those around him.
James, a regular and cheerful presence at Mawgan Stores, leaves a void in the hearts of his friends and family. MP Andrew George also expressed his condolences, highlighting how deeply the local community has been affected by this tragedy.
The Cornwall Coroner’s Office has been informed, and an inquest is set to open soon. Meanwhile, emergency services have confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
Rest in peace, James. Your warmth and kindness will not be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone who knew and loved him during this difficult time. 🌳❤️
