Tragic news from Ukraine has touched all our hearts. Thomas Phillips, a brave 29-year-old from Colwyn Bay, lost his battle with mental and physical pain after serving as a volunteer fighter during the Ukraine conflict. An inquest revealed that Thomas, affectionately known as Tom, took his own life in May 2025 due to the unbearable agony from severe injuries.

Tom joined the Royal Artillery at just 16, driven by a sense of duty and passion for service. After a hip injury ended his military career in the UK, he found a new purpose on the front lines in Ukraine as part of the International Legion, dedicating himself as a sniper and team leader. Despite his commitment, he was left without support for the injuries he sustained, leaving him in immense pain.

His mother, Sasha, shared during the inquest that the army life was all he knew and loved. Tom faced mental health challenges alongside his physical injuries, which included a broken back. His close friend, Gareth Haynes, highlighted a lack of support from the Ukrainian authorities, stating, “He was failed by the Ukraine military.”
Following Tom’s tragic death, loved ones rallied together with a Go Fund Me appeal to cover the costs of bringing him home and his funeral, since the Ukrainian government did not provide assistance because he did not die in action.
Tom’s courage and sacrifice remind us of the human cost of conflict and the importance of mental health support for our veterans. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends.
