Originally staring down the barrel of a £9 million deficit for 2026/2027, extra funding and strategic partnerships have helped bring that number way down. But, there’s still work to be done! Various other cost-cutting measures are in the pipeline to bridge the remaining gap.

While the council might be considering a 5% hike in council tax, nothing’s set in stone yet. Thanks to a 3.1% funding increase from the government, Merthyr Tydfil ranks fourth among the 22 Welsh local authorities for funding improvements.

Despite this encouraging settlement, the financial forecast isn’t entirely rosy. The council’s got £534,000 in pay pressures and an additional £2.6 million needed to cover demographic changes, legislation adjustments, and revenue losses.

On a brighter note, savvy strategies like the transformation programme have saved £354,000, and adjustments to the Rhondda Cynon Taf Pension Fund are freeing up another £2.35 million for 2026/27.

For now, schools are shielded from further budget slashes, but financial challenges still loom large over education as costs for additional needs and other expenses keep rising.
