A chilling story has emerged from Cwmbran, South Wales, where 18-year-old McKenzie Morgan was found guilty of possessing a terrorist manual. Morgan, who was vulnerable and socially isolated, had plotted to bomb the highly-anticipated Oasis reunion concert in Cardiff. In messages to friends, he shared plans inspired by online extremist content and dark thoughts, but thankfully, someone decided to speak up and alert the authorities.

Morgan had messaged friends on Snapchat, talking about his sinister intentions and even asking about purchasing items that could cause harm. His obsession with accessing dangerous materials and making deadly substances like ricin has raised serious concerns. Mental health professionals had flagged Morgan’s behaviour, describing him as a young man easily influenced by harmful content online.
Detective Superintendent Andy Williams highlighted the growing trend of young people like Morgan being exploited online by extremist content. It serves as a wake-up call to parents and carers about the exposure and risks children face in the digital world. Williams noted the need for big tech companies to step up and monitor harmful content, emphasizing that protecting our children isn’t about invading privacy but about ensuring their safety.

In court, Morgan’s defence stressed his vulnerability and history of being bullied. The judge acknowledged that while he had no deeply held ideological beliefs, his fascination with violent figures led him astray. Morgan has been sentenced to 14 months in youth detention, with additional support and supervision upon release.
This case has sparked further debate about the impact of social media on young minds and the scope of the Online Safety Act. There’s a strong call for more stringent measures to protect children from toxic material and ensure digital platforms do their part.
Let’s be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding our youth from the darker corners of the internet. Share this story, and if you’re aware of anyone at risk, don’t hesitate to report your concerns. Stay safe, everyone! 🛡️
