Christmas Eve turned into a nightmare for Jack Shaw at the Broad Oak pub in Connah’s Quay. The young martial arts fighter was brutally stabbed twice by former friend Luke Smaje in a shocking “revenge attack.” After suffering liver damage, Jack made a heart-wrenching call to his mum, fearing he wouldn’t survive, saying, “sorry for ruining Christmas.”

In court, Smaje, now 23, admitted to wounding and carrying a knife. The brutal attack stemmed from a tangled web of past relationships and unresolved issues. Months before, Smaje had hinted at this violent act, with the situation boiling over in the pub’s bar area during a heated verbal clash.
Smaje, reportedly acting on past grudges, attacked Jack before he could even step outside, leaving him with two stab wounds. Though one wound was superficial, the other pierced Jack’s liver, causing him to lose two and a half litres of blood. Quick actions by pub staff and emergency services ensured he made it to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and spent days in intensive care.

The unfolding court drama reveals Smaje’s defence pointing to a troubled past and the claim he acted in “self-defence.” On the other hand, the prosecution highlighted the premeditated nature of the stabbing, underscoring elements of revenge in this chilling ordeal.
As the legal proceedings continue, emotions run high, with new medical updates potentially affecting the outcome. For now, Jack Shaw fights not just for his physical recovery but also for justice, as the community watches closely to see how this intense courtroom saga will conclude.
