A tragic and unsettling incident has come to light, highlighting the dangers that can lurk online. Jake Richards, now 19, has been sentenced for the heinous act of raping a 12-year-old girl. The two met online and arranged to meet in person, leading to the horrific event in a secluded tunnel. Despite the girl pleading with Richards to stop, he heartlessly went ahead.

This brave young girl showed immense courage by coming forward. After about two years of silence, she confided in a friend and then bravely reported the incident to the police, leading to Richards’ arrest and conviction. He has since admitted to the crime at Swansea Crown Court and received a sentence of three years and six months.

Detective Sergeant Carl Pocock commended the victim’s bravery, emphasising the importance of discussing online safety, consent, and the law with youngsters. Thanks to the diligent work of Dyfed-Powys Police, including thorough forensic and digital investigations, a guilty plea was secured, sparing the victim from the ordeal of a trial.
This case underscores the vital need for awareness and conversation about online interactions and the significance of consent. It’s also a reminder that there are dedicated specialists out there to support and seek justice for victims of all ages.
