A devastating scene unfolded on Christmas Eve when a heated clash turned violent in a bustling Welsh pub. Tragically, Jack Shaw, a martial arts fighter, became the target of a “revenge” stabbing by Luke Smaje, both vying for the affection of the same woman. Smaje, 23, had been carrying a knife for some time and attacked Shaw in front of stunned onlookers at the Broad Oak pub, Connah’s Quay.

The court heard that Smaje aimed to “show pain” after feeling disrespected, and Shaw’s injuries were life-threatening. He was rushed to Countess of Chester Hospital, where he required two surgeries after losing a critical amount of blood.

Catherine Green, Shaw’s devastated mother, shared her anguish in court, recounting her terror during the hours she feared for her son’s life. “No parent should have to live with such fear,” she said. She revealed how her son’s weight plummeted as he struggled with recovery, threatening his dreams of becoming a professional fighter.

During the sentencing at Mold Crown Court, it was revealed that Smaje had also consumed alcohol and ketamine on the day of the assault. Judge Timothy Petts sentenced Smaje to seven years for the stabbing and 16 months for carrying a knife, highlighting the reckless nature of his crime.
This shocking incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating impact of knife crime. Let’s keep Jack Shaw in our thoughts as he embarks on the long road to recovery. 🌟 Stay safe out there, everyone.
