Justice finally catches up! Richard Downey, 55, thought he’d escaped the law for nearly three decades after a terrifying attack on a schoolgirl back in 1997. But advancements in DNA technology proved him wrong and he now faces a well-deserved eight-year prison sentence.

Back then, a young girl was walking home in Blackwood when Downey, disguised and armed with a screwdriver, attacked her. Though she bravely managed to escape, Downey’s identity remained a mystery due to limited forensic tools at the time. But in 2022, a breakthrough led to Downey’s arrest, bringing long-overdue justice for the victim.

The impact of the assault lingered for the victim, affecting her safety and mental health for years. In court, a statement read on her behalf powerfully expressed the lifelong trauma she faced. “The attack lasted minutes, but its impact has lasted a lifetime,” she confessed.
Judge Daniel Williams highlighted the premeditated nature of Downey’s crime and shunned his lack of remorse, stating, “You never thought you’d be caught.” It’s a reminder that no matter how long it takes, justice will find its way.
The Crown Prosecution Service and Gwent Police hope this case serves as a stark warning to others that the passage of time won’t shield criminals from justice. Downey’s sentencing is a significant milestone, providing some closure and peace to the victim who showed immense courage throughout the process.
Kudos to the dedicated officers and the brave survivor for ensuring that justice prevailed in the end! #JusticeServed #DNAtechnology #CPS #GwentPolice
