The UK Government has announced the biggest shake-up in policing in almost 200 years, with plans to streamline forces into a National Police Service (NPS) akin to a British FBI. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood revealed this ambitious overhaul in the House of Commons, aimed at making policing more efficient and cost-effective.

Under this new model, the number of police forces could be trimmed by two-thirds. While specific details are yet to come, a review is set to report back by summer. Currently, Wales has four police forces, but this could change significantly!

The proposal aims to enhance accountability and efficiency by unifying existing national bodies like the National Crime Agency and Counter Terrorism Policing. Local forces will focus more on battling “everyday crime” such as shoplifting and antisocial behaviour.

A major highlight? Forces will now strive to answer 90% of emergency calls within 10 seconds, and to respond to serious incidents much quicker. With £115 million in government funding, AI technology will be at the forefront of this transformation.

However, not everyone is thrilled. Concerns arise over potential centralisation and the risk of losing local touch, especially in rural areas. There are debates about whether this is the right moment to devolve policing powers to Wales, as past mergers in Scotland faced criticism.

Opinions are split, with some seeing it as a chance to modernise and align policing with the unique Welsh identity, while others, like Welsh Lib Dem spokesman David Chadwick, urge caution against the merger of Wales’ forces into a single entity.
