Man armed with knife smashes brick into neighbor’s vehicle in frenzied attack

In a bizarre late-night episode, Kasim Gehlan, 28, armed himself with two knives and took to the streets of Penarth, where he attacked a neighbour’s BMW with a brick. Believing he was being pursued by the military, Gehlan’s chaotic actions unfolded in the early hours, catching the attention of a dog walker who thought he was under the influence.

The drama peaked when Gehlan, convinced the SAS were in the vehicle, punched the car and smashed its rear window with a brick. The car’s owner, visiting his girlfriend, confronted Gehlan only to hear the unexpected military-related explanation. Gehlan later claimed he suffered blackouts and couldn’t recall anything from that night.

In court, the judge described Gehlan’s behaviour as “peculiar, eccentric, concerning and bizarre”. Despite previously pleading guilty to criminal damage and possession of a knife, Gehlan’s prior convictions—including unlawful wounding—didn’t help his case. At the time of the incident, he was under a 22-month suspended sentence for wounding from 2024.

Though hopes for a mental health treatment requirement were dashed, Gehlan now realises the importance of his medication. Judge Lucy Crowther, acknowledging Gehlan’s psychotic episode, stressed the necessity of mental health care. The judge handed Gehlan a six-month prison sentence, adding four months from his suspended sentence for a total of 10 months. Additionally, a 15-month restraining order was imposed, barring him from contacting the BMW owner. The butcher’s knife, laden with sentimental value, was confiscated.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the impact of mental health struggles and the significance of seeking help and adhering to prescribed treatments. Stay safe, everyone.
