Andrea Berry, a vibrant 57-year-old from Cardiff, awoke from a midday nap to a terrifying reality: she couldn’t move the right side of her body or call out for help. What seemed like a normal bout of tiredness turned into a life-altering stroke.

For Andrea, an active mum and grandma, this unexpected event started with subtle signs: neck, shoulder, and arm pain on her left side, worsening over a month. Despite her high blood pressure, she shrugged it off as a busy lifestyle symptom. But the day her son came running to her rescue, after hearing her desperately bang the floor with her left foot, things took a serious turn.

Her son remembered the FAST stroke adverts from his childhood and immediately called for help. In the face of a four-hour wait for an ambulance, swift action was necessary. Wrapped in a duvet, Andrea’s family bravely transported her to A&E themselves. There, the race against time continued. Just half an hour remained to administer the life-saving drug, thrombolysis. Andrea recalls the fear, but also her incredible luck in receiving timely care.

Four and a half weeks in hospital followed, where each step was a triumph. With the support of amazing therapists and a dedicated stroke support coordinator, Andrea relearned basic movements, gradually regaining some independence. Her determination is nothing short of inspiring.
Today, Andrea is embracing a slower but fulfilling life. She’s painting, helping her daughter with projects, and learning to drive using left-hand controls. Small victories, like using a lightweight hoover or enjoying walks to the bus stop, mark her progress.
Her story is also about giving back. Andrea volunteers with the Stroke Association, offering newfound hope and advice, knowing firsthand the challenges of recovery.
Through life’s detours, Andrea has discovered new dreams, like travelling around the UK and beyond. Her outlook is one of gratitude and positivity. “Life in the slow lane isn’t bad,” she reflects. “It’s peaceful. You learn to be the best version of yourself, one small, grateful step at a time.”
Andrea’s journey is a powerful reminder that life, no matter how it changes, can still be filled with joy and purpose. 🌟 #StrokeAwareness #Inspiration #LifeAfterStroke
