π¨ Smelly Situation in Abernant! π¨

Residents of Abernant, near the Llwydcoed landfill site, are speaking out about a foul stench that’s been lingering in their area. Imagine dealing with the smell of sewage and rotten eggs for days! π₯΄

Locals report headaches, nausea, and irritation from the odour, and they’re fed up. Sorrel Hill, a resident, took these concerns to the county councillors. While there’s been capping work to contain gas emissions at the landfill, the unpredictable and episodic nature of the smells remains a big issue.

The current monitoring depends on site visits and complaints, but these odorous episodes come and go before they can be properly recorded. Sorrel suggests continuous automated monitoring to get real-time data on what’s actually happening. π
NRW (Natural Resources Wales) is also involved, but residents feel more regular updates and transparency in the ongoing investigations would be hugely beneficial. A recent Senedd report supports the need for continuous monitoring and better communication for landfill sites with similar issues.
Council leader Andrew Morgan mentions many steps have been taken, with 101 air quality tests conducted, but detecting those elusive smells remains challenging. Most samples show hydrogen sulphate levels below visible detection, but residents remain concerned.
One street in Abernant seems to be the hotspot for these complaints, accounting for half of them. Further investigations are definitely on the cards to get to the bottom of this stinky mystery. π€
Residents are demanding action, transparency, and meaningful engagement to tackle these odour woes. Letβs hope they get the support they need. πͺ
