Following his release from a Dorset prison last year, 66-year-old Spelman chose to “live off-grid” instead of registering his address, as required by law. His disappearance led to multiple public appeals, even making it onto Crimewatch, as police actioned a national search.

Prosecutors revealed Spelman’s past conviction for 12 counts of sexual assault on a child under 14, for which he originally received a seven-year sentence in 2014. Whether it was on public transport or campsites, authorities believed he was constantly moving, with connections to areas like Merseyside, Manchester, Devon, Cornwall, and beyond.

Once caught, Spelman appeared at Swansea Crown Court, where it emerged he didn’t agree with his original conviction but now seeks a “normal life” with stable accommodation. Interestingly, Spelman’s own counsel argued for a custodial sentence to facilitate planning for his future reintegration into society.

Spelman received a 10-month prison sentence—out in five—with strict warnings that any future offences would result in stiffer penalties. The judge noted some inclination in Spelman towards change, but stressed compliance with court orders moving forward.

Let’s hope our communities can soon feel safer with this development. 🕵️‍♀️ #SafetyFirst #CrimeUpdate
