Heartfelt tributes are pouring in for John Virgo, the beloved snooker legend and commentator, who sadly passed away at the age of 79. Virgo died early on Wednesday morning in Spain, where he lived with his wife Rosie. Known as the voice of snooker, his loss has stunned fans and stars across the sporting world.

TV star Jim Davidson paid a touching tribute to his dear friend and former Big Break co-star, sharing the sad news with his followers. Davidson fondly spoke about their friendship that began while working together on the popular BBC show in the 90s. Despite their differing personalities — Virgo, the stalwart Northern socialist, and Davidson, the outspoken Southern comedian — the duo’s chemistry was undeniable, making them a favourite for millions of viewers.

Davidson reminisced about their days on Big Break, highlighting how Virgo didn’t even need to audition for the role that made him a household name. He recalled how they met at a racecourse and bonded over their shared love for horse racing.
In a heartfelt video tribute, Davidson expressed his shock and sadness, having just spoken to Virgo’s daughter, Brooke-Leah. He said, “It’s truly a cliche, but our thoughts and hearts go out to Brooke-Leah, Gary, and the family. John was a great snooker player, a brilliant dad, and an even better friend.”
He also shared his regret that Virgo won’t join him for the planned 50-year anniversary celebration of his career, but promised to honour him instead. “We were like chalk and cheese but got on like a house on fire,” Davidson added.
Their unexpected friendship may have baffled some, but Virgo had always maintained, “Although Jim didn’t know much about snooker, what a funny and generous man to work with. The most important thing was the show worked, and we worked well together.”
Though their paths crossed less frequently in recent years due to controversies surrounding Davidson, Virgo always acknowledged Davidson’s comedic talent, despite their divergent paths. This heartfelt tribute reminds us of their wonderful partnership and the legacy Virgo left behind in the snooker world.
