🔍 The State of Education in Wales: What’s Going Wrong? 📚

Wales’ education system is under the spotlight, and the chief schools inspector has called out some key issues. Owen Evans of Estyn has highlighted troubling “weaknesses” across Welsh schools, ranging from literacy and numeracy to digital skills. While there are shining examples of excellence, the lack of consistency is holding students back across the board.

Key concerns:
1️⃣ Literacy & Numeracy: Despite a few schools cultivating a rich reading culture, many lack true focus on developing critical reading and precise writing skills.
2️⃣ Digital Skills: Schools are struggling to weave effective digital competence into students’ learning journeys.
What’s more, teaching quality is inconsistent. While some primary schools excel in fostering mathematical understanding, others fall short. In secondary schools, high-quality teaching is not yet the norm, with only a minority truly hitting the mark.
Special schools demonstrate better progress, but secondary schools are grappling with uneven teaching quality. Inconsistent self-evaluation and challenges in recruiting staff further complicate the landscape.
Mr Evans warns that without a sharper focus on these areas, learners will continue to miss their full potential. He advocates for actionable change to mend the system’s faults and boost educational standards.
The Welsh Government has acknowledged these challenges and is investing millions in literacy and numeracy projects to address them, but there’s a need for ongoing, cohesive action to ensure all students can thrive.
