Nigel Owens Shares His View on the Ellis Genge Drama!

A rugby match between Wales and England turned into a major talking point when Ellis Genge made headlines for an alleged ‘headbutt’ incident against Wales star Alex Mann. England comfortably won 48-7, but it’s Genge’s clash with Mann that has stolen the spotlight.

Caught on camera, Genge appeared to push his head into Mann’s face. Referee Pierre Brousset deemed it a mere penalty, sparking outrage and debate post-match. Former ref Owen Doyle was shocked, saying it was a “clear headbutt” that should’ve warranted more than just a penalty.
However, legendary former referee Nigel Owens weighed in with a differing perspective. Chatting with Jamie Roberts on Whistle Watch, Owens argued that Genge’s actions didn’t constitute a headbutt and therefore didn’t merit a red card. Owens explained, “You’ve got two players squaring up, and Ellis pushes his head forward. It’s not a headbutt or red card situation.”
Owens noted that while such actions are undesirable in rugby, the correct call would have been issuing a yellow card. He added that although there was contact, it wasn’t quite the aggressive foul play a headbutt implies.
So, what do you think? Did Genge get off easy, or was the penalty fair play? Let us know your thoughts! 🏉💬 #RugbyDebate #EllisGenge #NigelOwens #SixNations2026
