**Will Ferrell Set to Light Up Broadway with Eurovision Musical Adaptation**
Hollywood star Will Ferrell has revealed his enthusiasm for bringing a stage musical inspired by the Eurovision Song Contest to New York’s iconic Broadway. The project, which draws on Ferrell’s 2020 Netflix comedy film *Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga*, is expected to blend the raucous, eclectic spirit of the real-life song competition with Broadway’s trademark flair.
Ferrell, best known for his roles in comedy hits such as *Elf* and *Anchorman*, expressed his excitement about the production, calling the theatre “a perfect place” to showcase the lovable chaos and pan-European camaraderie that Eurovision stands for. The 57-year-old actor was quoted as saying, “The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.”
Reuniting several creative talents from the original film, the musical’s writing duties are being handled by Ferrell himself alongside Harper Steele. The pair have an established history of collaboration, including their recent work on the documentary *Will & Harper*. Joining them is Anthony King, an experienced TV and Broadway writer, further solidifying the team’s credentials. Music for the show comes courtesy of Savan Kotecha, who gained wide praise for his work on the film’s anthems, including the Oscar-nominated “Husavik (My Hometown)”.
Directing the stage version is Alex Timbers, a Tony Award-winning director noted for his work on productions such as *Moulin Rouge!* and *Here Lies Love*. Timbers expressed both admiration for the source material and the challenge ahead. “Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are my comedy heroes. Their joyful film *Eurovision* was a tonic during the pandemic’s bleakest moments. I’m eager to channel that same irreverent spirit and spectacle for live audiences,” he shared.
The Netflix movie, starring Ferrell alongside Rachel McAdams and Dan Stevens, cast the actors as Icelandic hopefuls Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir, whose dreams lead them to the intense world of Eurovision. Their journey, filled with mishaps and mettle, echoed the high drama and distinctive musical performances for which the annual song contest is known.
The original film’s music, particularly the moving ballad “Husavik (My Hometown)”, caught both audience and critics’ attention, even earning an Academy Award nomination. It was penned by Kotecha together with Fat Max Gsus and Rickard Göransson, whose return to the Broadway adaptation promises continuity of the film’s heartfelt musical core.
Representatives from Eurovision’s European Broadcasting Union, including contest director Martin Green, have thrown their support behind the upcoming stage version. Green commented, “This is a stellar team for what I am sure will be an equally stellar adaptation of a film the world loved.” The move coincides with Eurovision’s growing global footprint, as it approaches its 70th anniversary in 2026.
Interest in Eurovision has remained high, with the latest event seeing 24-year-old Austrian opera singer JJ triumph with the song *Wasted Love* in 2025. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom’s entry finished 19th, highlighting the competitive spirit and diverse talent showcased annually.
Netflix, the company behind the original *Fire Saga* movie, has made previous forays into stage via the West End, notably adapting its hit series *Stranger Things* into a prequel play. This endeavour demonstrates a trend of TV and film narratives being successfully reinvented for the theatre.
As the team sets its sights on Broadway, there is wide anticipation among fans and theatre-goers alike. With such an acclaimed creative team and the infectious appeal of Eurovision’s spectacle, the production is poised to bring a fresh burst of musical joy to New York’s theatre scene in the near future.
