**Family Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Young Man Following Fatal A465 Collision**

The family of a Brynmawr man who tragically lost his life in a collision on the A465 have spoken of “unimaginable heartbreak” as the local community gathers in mourning and police investigations continue. Ethan Powell, aged 20, was pronounced dead at the scene in the early hours of Saturday, 31 May, following an incident that has left a profound mark on those who knew him.

Emergency services were called to the Heads of the Valleys road between Rhymney and Dowlais after reports of an overturned quad bike. On arrival, officers found Ethan next to the vehicle, but he could not be saved. The news has shocked the local community, with an outpouring of grief and support for Ethan’s loved ones.
In an emotional statement, Ethan’s family described him as possessing “the kindest of souls” and “the biggest of hearts.” They shared how he was well-known for his warmth and generosity, saying he could “light up a room,” and was “the funniest of characters.” The family added that while no words could truly capture their loss, they will remember Ethan “every second of every day” as a cherished son and brother to Eleanor and Isabella.
This tragic accident has prompted an extensive police enquiry, with five individuals arrested as part of Gwent Police’s ongoing investigation. One of those arrested, a 40-year-old man from Merthyr, faces charges including suspicion of murder, as well as driving offences related to drink and drugs. Others have been questioned on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender, with several individuals released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.
The force confirmed further arrests midweek, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to five. Amongst those now helping police with their investigation are a 43-year-old from Tredegar, a 34-year-old from Pontypridd, and a 41-year-old from Merthyr. The latter was also recalled to prison in connection with a separate matter.
As officers piece together the circumstances of the incident, they continue to appeal for anyone who was travelling along the A465 between 2am and 5am on Saturday to come forward, especially motorists with dashcam footage who may have vital information. A burnt-out white BMW, found in the Dowlais area, is believed to be linked to the collision, and detectives are urging the public to help trace its movements or owners.
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Edwards, who is leading the investigation, expressed the force’s condolences and underlined the importance of community cooperation in finding answers: “If you saw anything, or have dashcam footage from that night – particularly regarding a white BMW – we urge you to contact us. No detail is too small as we seek to give the family the answers they deserve.”
The sense of loss has resonated throughout Brynmawr and nearby Crickhowell, where friends and residents have come together to remember Ethan. A GoFundMe page, set up to support his family’s immediate needs, has already raised more than £1,700. On Wednesday evening, well-wishers assembled outside Crickhowell Castle for a poignant tribute, laying flowers and sharing stories that spoke to Ethan’s lasting impact on his peers and community.
In their statement, Ethan’s family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support: “It brings us comfort to see just how deeply Ethan was loved and respected. Now, we kindly ask for privacy to grieve our unimaginable loss.”
Police continue to request that anyone with information relevant to the investigation contacts them by calling 101, via their website, or through direct message on social media referencing log 2500171434. Anonymous tips can also be shared via Crimestoppers.
The tragic death of Ethan Powell stands as yet another sombre reminder of the far-reaching effects of road incidents. As the investigation continues, the thoughts of the community remain with Ethan’s family, united in the hope that answers will soon emerge and that justice will be served.
