**Motorists Across Wales Advised of Major Roadworks and Closures This Weekend**

Commuters and travellers across Wales are being urged to take heed of significant roadworks, maintenance projects, and closures planned for this weekend, with authorities warning that delays and disruptions are likely to affect various routes. With many people expected to travel over the weekend, either for leisure or daily errands, the timing of these scheduled works poses potential challenges for drivers attempting to navigate Wales’s road network.

Among the most notable works is essential resurfacing scheduled for the M4 eastbound. The stretch from junction 49 at Pont Abraham to junction 48 near Hendy will be affected, with works running overnight from Saturday 7 June through to Sunday 8 June, between the hours of 8pm and 6am. Local officials are encouraging drivers in the area to allow for extra journey time, as contraflows and diversions are expected to be in operation, with the intention of minimising safety risks for both motorists and those working on site.

Additional disruption is expected in Monmouth, where a contraflow has been implemented on the A40 in both directions, covering the section between the Dixton roundabout at A466 and B4164/Norton Close in Whitchurch. This arrangement is anticipated to remain in place until late August, affecting both local and through traffic.
Carmarthenshire will also see ongoing maintenance, with temporary traffic lights on the A484 between Pantglas (near Glangwili) and Bronwydd Arms (B4301) forecasted to cause minor delays until the end of June. In the Johnstown area of Carmarthen, a longer-term closure is in effect on Old St Clears Road westbound, from Job’s Well Road to Millbank Road, and is scheduled to persist until March 2026.
Meanwhile, drivers travelling through Gwynedd should note long-term roadworks on the A5 Menai Bridge. Temporary lights are in operation between the Antelope roundabout (A487 Treborth Road) and A545 Telford Road, with lane restrictions due to continue until the end of December. Authorities are advising drivers to plan accordingly, particularly during peak periods when congestion is likely to worsen.
Further closures have been reported in Denbighshire, where the B5429 is shut in both directions between Bodfari’s Ffynnon Y Chwarel and Tremeirchion’s Heol-Y-Brenin until late October. Road users are urged to seek alternative routes and obey all posted signage for their safety and the safety of road workers.
Urban areas are similarly affected. In Grangetown, Cardiff, roadworks continue on A4119 Clare Road at its junction with A4160 Penarth Road until 13 June, while Colum Road in Blackweir is shut from North Road (A470) to Colum Place until 9 June. Residents in Merthyr Tydfil’s Walter’s Terrace are experiencing a prolonged closure due to gas main installation, spanning from Railway Close to Perthygleision until 1 July.
Elsewhere, Wales’s rural and semi-urban communities are not immune from the spate of improvement projects currently underway. Pentre’s Park Road in Wrexham is closed from the A5 to The Newbridge Arms until 24 July. In Powys, Hillside Road is inaccessible from Lime Trees Avenue to Beacon Park Boats until 7 August, disrupting normal traffic flow for the duration.
Longer-term works continue to affect other routes. Llanerch Park in Trefnant is closed from Llys Llannerch to Cae Pedr in Tremeirchion until April 2026. Swansea’s Dunvant Road is likewise closed at both ends between Wimmerfield Drive and Hendrefoilan Road for the next two years. Additionally, the A487 between Tre’r ddol and Furnace in Ceredigion will be subject to temporary lights and traffic restrictions until March 2026.
Officials are urging all road users to check travel updates regularly, plan their journeys in advance, and consider alternative routes where possible. Many of these works are part of broader infrastructure improvement programmes and are aimed at both upgrading road surfaces and ensuring the long-term safety and resilience of Welsh transport networks.
As travel conditions remain fluid, those affected by these projects can monitor real-time updates via official channels and local government advisories to stay informed and reduce the potential for unexpected delays.
