Celebrated sports broadcaster Gabby Logan was reportedly left far from impressed on her wedding day, following a mishap during the all-important first dance with husband Kenny Logan. The former rugby international recently opened up about how an unexpected musical blunder left his bride, now the newest Match of the Day presenter, quietly seething as the festivities unfolded.

Kenny, 53, is no stranger to high-pressure moments, having earned 70 caps for Scotland before retiring from international rugby in 2003. Yet, according to his own admission, nothing had quite prepared him for the blunder that occurred during his nuptials in 2001, two years before hanging up his boots.

The couple’s story began in 1999, when a chance encounter in a Fulham bar introduced the Scottish sport star to Gabby, an accomplished gymnast-turned-presenter. Fast-forward to their wedding day, it seemed everything was set for a flawless celebration. However, as Kenny recently explained on BBC Radio to Vernon Kay during the Tracks of My Years segment, the pair’s carefully practised routine fell apart at the first hurdle.

Kenny recounted that he and Gabby had taken the time to practise their first dance the night before, choosing an upbeat George Michael song that had personal meaning for the pair. With the big day on the horizon, both anticipated a memorable moment. “I was never a Strictly star, but we needed a move we could both manage,” he quipped, referring to his own dance experience, or lack thereof.

Yet, as the couple took to the dancefloor and the music began to play, it became immediately apparent to Gabby that something was awry. Instead of their chosen tune, “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers filled the room – a soulful classic, but not the track they had practised so meticulously to. “I am tone deaf on the music front – and this just proves it!” Kenny told Kay, explaining how Gabby leaned in to whisper urgently, “It’s the wrong track.” Kenny, oblivious to the error, could only smile as they danced, while Gabby, by his own admission, was “fuming”.

The comedic tale has since become part of the family’s lore, but it’s clear the moment was far less amusing at the time. Guests apparently remained none the wiser, offering compliments on the ‘lovely song’ despite it not being their intended first dance.

Since that eventful day, Gabby and Kenny have built a thriving family life. Four years after their wedding, they welcomed twins Reuben and Lois, following a course of IVF treatment. The twins have each forged their own paths, with Reuben joining the Northampton Saints rugby team – echoing his father’s legacy – and Lois pursuing show jumping while embarking on her studies at Loughborough University.

In recent years, the family weathered new challenges. In 2022, Kenny was diagnosed with prostate cancer during a wellness check. Remarkably, the impetus to undergo screening came after he listened to his wife’s podcast, Mid•Point, highlighting the importance of staying vigilant over men’s health. Kenny subsequently underwent a successful operation to remove his prostate and has since become a vocal advocate for regular PSA tests, calling attention to what he describes as a “silent cancer”.

Gabby, meanwhile, continues to be a respected figure in sports media, taking on the prestigious role of Match of the Day presenter and remaining an influential voice in both broadcasting and women’s sport.

Their wedding day story, while initially a source of frustration for Gabby, ultimately serves as a reminder that even well-laid plans can go astray – and that humour and resilience remain at the heart of a successful partnership.
