A 40-year-old motorcyclist has tragically lost his life following a collision on a busy main road in Powys, Wales. The incident, which resulted in fatal injuries, occurred when the rider’s motorcycle crashed into the rear of a car that was stationary in a line of queued traffic.

The accident unfolded in the early afternoon of 25 May last year on the A483 near Llananno, a stretch of dual carriageway that is frequently used by motorists travelling northwards from Llanbister to Newtown. The details of the incident were recently outlined during a hearing at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court, where coroner Graeme Hughes delivered the findings in a documentary inquest.

According to the evidence presented in court, Robert Stephenson, a pricing systems manager from Telford, had been riding his motorbike northbound when the collision occurred. For reasons that remain undetermined, Mr Stephenson failed to notice that traffic ahead had come to a complete halt. The court heard that as he approached the back of the queue, his motorcycle collided with the rearmost vehicle on the offside.
Coroner Graeme Hughes explained: “Mr Stephenson rode into a line of stationary traffic and collided with the rearmost vehicle. As a result, he suffered catastrophic multiple injuries which sadly proved to be fatal.” There were no further details provided as to what might have contributed to his inability to notice the stationary vehicles, and police have not indicated whether factors such as weather, road conditions, or mechanical failure could have played a role.
Emergency services attended the scene promptly, but despite their best efforts, Mr Stephenson could not be saved. The coroner concluded that his death was the direct result of a road traffic collision.
Robert Stephenson was described as a married man with a professional career, having worked in Telford as a pricing systems manager. News of his death has come as a shock to both loved ones and the wider community, who have expressed their condolences following the release of the coroner’s report.
The A483, particularly in the area around Llananno, is known to carry significant volumes of traffic, especially during busy weekday afternoons. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder to all road users of the importance of remaining vigilant and observant, particularly when approaching areas where congestion or sudden stops are possible.
Dyfed-Powys Police have not released any further information regarding ongoing investigations but urge motorists and motorcyclists alike to exercise caution and pay close attention to current traffic conditions, especially on major routes prone to congestion. Safety campaigners frequently highlight the risks faced by motorcyclists, who remain among the most vulnerable users on Britain’s roads.
The loss of Robert Stephenson will be felt deeply by his family, friends, and colleagues as they come to terms with this sudden and tragic accident. It is hoped that the circumstances surrounding his death will reinforce the message of road safety and encourage all drivers to take extra care when behind the wheel or handlebars.
Further updates or statements from the authorities are expected as the traffic investigation is formally closed. For now, the case stands as a sombre chapter in Wales’ ongoing efforts to reduce road fatalities and improve safety for all commuters.
