**Wales Boasts Best UK Beaches as Welsh Towns Dominate National Survey**

When it comes to seaside destinations in the United Kingdom, Wales has once again captured the spotlight for its spectacular coastlines and vibrant holiday towns. According to recent findings by the respected consumer group Which?, Welsh beaches rank amongst the very best in the UK, with more than one Welsh town gaining top scores in a nationwide survey.
The Which? survey gathered feedback from nearly 4,000 people who had visited British seaside spots within the past year. Participants rated their experiences across several categories, including beach quality, scenic charm, eating and drinking options, accommodation, tourist attractions, and overall value for money. The latest results, released on 29 June 2025, reinforce what many holidaymakers already believe: Wales is a dreamy destination for beach lovers.

Bamburgh in Northumberland retained its position at the summit for an impressive fifth year running, earning plaudits for its pristine sands and historic castle backdrop. However, the survey suggests that Welsh destinations are making a sizeable impact, securing two places in the top five best-rated seaside escapes.
Portmeirion in Gwynedd, a picturesque village famous for its Italian-inspired architecture and exuberant colours, proved a popular choice among tourists. It achieved a 79% overall satisfaction rating, with visitors charmed by its unique ambiance and photogenic scenery. As an example of Wales’ ability to blend cultural heritage with natural beauty, Portmeirion’s popularity shows no sign of waning.
Joining Portmeirion in fourth place was another Welsh gem: St Davids, nestled in Pembrokeshire. Despite being the smallest city in the UK, St Davids equalled Portmeirion’s score with another 79% destination rating. Visitors praised the city for its breathtaking coastline, historical landmarks, and peaceful atmosphere—underlining the diversity of experiences available in Wales.
The true spotlight, however, was reserved for Tenby, also in Pembrokeshire, which emerged as a clear standout due to its popular beaches. Out of all the towns included in the survey, only three received the maximum five-star rating for their beaches — and Tenby was among this elite group. With four family-friendly beaches and stunning views of landmarks such as Goscar Rock, Tenby continues to draw both locals and holidaymakers year-round.
Despite its reputation for attracting crowds during peak seasons, Tenby still managed to earn a respectable three stars for tranquillity, with many respondents recommending a visit during quieter off-peak months. This is testament to the enduring allure of its Georgian streets and seaside charm.
The other two locations to achieve beach perfection were Bamburgh and Tynemouth, both renowned in their own right, but Tenby’s presence on the list highlights Wales’ growing role as the UK’s beach capital. The breadth of options — from colourful villages to bustling beachside resorts — gives Wales an advantage, attracting visitors in search of both relaxation and adventure.
Rory Boland, Editor of Which?, remarked: “From beautiful coastlines to peaceful walks and charming traditional bucket-and-spade resorts, the UK seaside offers something for everyone – whatever the weather.” He encouraged travellers to consider not only their favourite spots in Devon and Wales but also to keep an open mind for hidden gems yet to discover.
For those searching for better value, Boland also recommended exploring the areas adjacent to popular destinations. Sometimes, a few miles further afield can unlock not only savings on accommodation but also a less crowded, more authentic experience.
Overall, the Which? survey paints a glowing picture of Welsh seaside destinations. Whether it’s the architectural curiosity of Portmeirion, the historic serenity of St Davids, or the sun-kissed beaches of Tenby, it is clear that Wales is holding its own as the premier destination for those seeking the best of the British seaside. As summer approaches, Welsh towns look set to welcome another wave of appreciative visitors eager to experience their unique blend of history, hospitality and natural beauty.
