**Amazon Recalls Orgenism Food Supplement Over Fears of Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella Contamination**

Consumers have been urged to steer clear of a food supplement available through Amazon and direct manufacturer sales after it was found to contain a strain of Salmonella that resists several antibiotics. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued an alert on Thursday, stressing the serious health risks posed by Orgenism’s Eggshell Membrane Capsules after several consumers fell ill.

According to details released by the FSA, the affected supplement has sickened a number of individuals, with reported symptoms ranging from fever and diarrhoea to severe abdominal cramps. While Salmonella infection is always a public health concern, the specific bacteria identified in this product has raised additional alarm due to its ability to withstand treatment from commonly used antibiotics, making some cases more challenging for healthcare providers to manage.
A spokesperson for the Food Standards Agency clarified the gravity of the current situation: “Orgenism is recalling Eggshell Membrane Capsules sold on Amazon after testing revealed the presence of Salmonella. This bacterium is equipped with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), and has demonstrated resistance to several antibiotics, including fluoroquinolones, tetracycline, and Fosfomycin. This presents a significant challenge for treating any infections that arise”.
The FSA further warned that improper disposal of the contaminated supplement could exacerbate public health risks and potentially harm animals or the environment. Consumers in possession of Orgenism’s Eggshell Membrane Capsules are strongly encouraged not to consume or discard the capsules in household bins or by flushing them down toilets.
“Disposal of such products needs careful handling. Consumers should contact Orgenism by emailing team@orgenism.com to organise a return using a prepaid envelope, ensuring the capsules are destroyed safely and do not contribute to environmental contamination,” the official statement outlined.
Health authorities have emphasised the importance of returning any affected product, even if unopened or unused, to avoid the risk of accidental exposure. Moreover, authorities have urged anyone who has consumed the recalled supplement and feels unwell to promptly consult a healthcare professional. The typical symptoms related to Salmonella infection include fever, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and sometimes vomiting. While many people recover on their own, vulnerable individuals, particularly those with weakened immune systems, may require more intensive medical care—especially given the antibiotic-resistant nature of the strain involved in this incident.
The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to alert both consumers and local authorities of food-related risks. Additionally, in situations deemed high-risk, a more urgent ‘Food Alert for Action’ is disseminated to local authorities, instructing them on specific intervention steps to be taken.
The Orgenism recall comes amid a series of food safety incidents recently highlighted by the FSA. For instance, Redmoor Ltd recently recalled batches of Japanese Rice Crackers due to undeclared peanuts—a significant risk for individuals with allergies. Similarly, Fortune Foods Ltd removed certain stocks of Laoganma Brand Black Bean Chilli Sauce from shelves because of unlabelled peanut content.
The recall of Orgenism’s supplement underscores ongoing concerns about food safety and the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria through consumer products. As antibiotic resistance continues to spread globally, public health experts warn of the potential for even routine infections to become more dangerous and harder to treat.
Shoppers are encouraged to check their cupboards for the affected capsules and to follow official guidance for their return and disposal, rather than risking the health of themselves or others. Further updates on this product recall and others can be found on the FSA website or through local health authorities. Consumers with ongoing concerns or questions related to product safety are advised to stay vigilant and to seek guidance promptly from health professionals.
