**Government Unveils Major Funding Package to Improve Transport Links in England and Wales**
Communities across England and Wales are set to receive a significant boost following the announcement of fresh government investment in local transport infrastructure. More than £300 million has been set aside to enhance transport provision, aiming to improve connectivity between towns, support access to employment, and drive economic revival.
The wide-ranging funding, totalling £301 million, was revealed as part of the UK Government’s wider transport improvement plan. Workers and residents in areas such as Powys, Peterborough, and Preston are among those who stand to benefit, with targeted investments to strengthen travel options and ease journeys to jobs and services.
In Wales, notable projects will be delivered in partnership with Neath Port Talbot Council and Powys Council. Among the headline schemes is a £12 million allocation to re-open the Newbridge Bridge, a key river crossing in need of modernisation. Alongside this, funds will go towards establishing a shared footpath and cycle track parallel to the carriageway, promoting active travel and safer routes for cyclists and pedestrians.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves highlighted the importance of these investments, emphasising how they are designed to connect communities and enhance employment prospects through better transport infrastructure. Reeves, who confirmed the cash during a recent spending review, stated, “We are directing funds into Britain’s renewal, delivering improvements that touch the everyday lives of people across the nation. This investment forms a crucial pillar of our Plan for Change, by ensuring economic progress is linked to improved local opportunities and smoother journeys.”
As part of broader transport commitments, Reeves also outlined a separate £445 million funding package dedicated to Welsh railway improvements. This additional money is earmarked for projects that include repairing rail level crossings, building new railway stations, and upgrading existing lines along strategic routes in both north and south Wales.
Reeves reiterated the government’s ambition to “unlock economic potential” by delivering the infrastructure needed for ongoing growth. “These enhancements are not only about facilitating travel, but also about creating jobs in construction and related industries,” she noted.
The Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, echoed these sentiments, describing the funding as a milestone for communities that have often experienced underinvestment. Alexander commented, “This is as much about strengthening local economies as it is about cutting journey times. Investing in transport bandwidth serves every corner of England and Wales—especially those previously overlooked.”
