A British holidaymaker, aged 78, has tragically lost her life after being found unresponsive in a hotel swimming pool in the popular Greek resort of Hersonissos, Crete. The incident, which unfolded earlier this week, has led Greek authorities to arrest three individuals on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence in connection with the death.

According to initial reports, the woman, whose identity has not yet been released, had entered the pool apparently to escape the summer heat. Witnesses say she appeared to become distressed while in the water. Bystanders reportedly rushed to help when it became clear something was wrong, and the woman was lifted from the pool. Emergency services were called to the scene and attempted to revive her, but despite extensive efforts, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

Greek police have confirmed the arrests of a 21-year-old lifeguard who was on duty at the time of the incident, along with two hotel managers, aged 41 and 51 respectively. All three were detained on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence, a serious charge under Greek legal statutes that can cover accidental deaths where appropriate safeguards or oversight may have failed. However, it has now been confirmed that the trio have since been released on bail while investigations continue.

The hotel involved has not yet issued a public comment regarding the incident. The identity of the deceased woman has not been officially released, out of respect for her family’s privacy. The British embassy in Athens is understood to be assisting the family during this difficult time.

This latest fatality is part of a worrying pattern this summer, with several tourists losing their lives across Greek resorts. Just weeks prior to this tragedy, another British tourist, aged 74, was found lifeless on a sun lounger at Stalis Beach, also located on the island of Crete. Local reports stated that the man was believed to have gone for a swim before returning to rest, after which he began to feel unwell. Despite rapid intervention from emergency services, he could not be saved.

In a separate and equally harrowing incident, a young girl—thought to be only two or three years old—was found dead on Eden Beach, near Athens. She was discovered by a passer-by and, in a desperate attempt to save her, was transported by ambulance to Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital. Sadly, doctors were unable to revive her.

The series of incidents has heightened concerns about the safety of tourists frequenting Greek resorts and beaches, with many questioning whether lifeguard services, emergency response protocols, and health and safety standards are adequate during the busy summer season. In the wake of these tragedies, there may now be increased pressure on both Greek authorities and local hospitality providers to enforce stricter safety measures.

For British nationals travelling abroad, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office continues to emphasise the importance of adhering to safety guidelines around water, especially for the elderly and young children, as well as remaining vigilant regarding personal health in extreme heat.

While holidaying in Greece remains hugely popular with British tourists each year, the recent string of accidents underscores the vulnerabilities that can arise in resort environments. Families are encouraged to exercise caution and ensure they are aware of available emergency services and procedures at their accommodation.

The investigation into the woman’s death in Hersonissos remains ongoing. Greek officials have not ruled out further action depending on the findings of post-mortem examinations and any new evidence that comes to light. The British community in Crete and across Greece is reportedly shocked by these events, which have cast a sombre shadow over the normally bustling holiday atmosphere.
