The family had arrived that day with every intention of enjoying some time together at the scenic seaside. However, the pleasant atmosphere was shattered when Lyra and her grandmother, while merely paddling at the water’s edge, were struck unexpectedly by a large wave. The sheer force of the water knocked both off their feet, and within just 20 seconds, they found themselves swept up by successive waves, struggling desperately to regain their balance.

RNLI lifeguard Molly Newland was patrolling nearby when she noticed the pair in difficulties. Recalling the harrowing experience, Molly said she quickly realised the situation was becoming perilous when she saw Lyra separated from her distressed grandmother, both being tossed about by relentless waves. With little time to lose, Molly rushed into the thigh-deep water to intervene.

The situation escalated briefly as another set of waves trapped both Pauline and Lyra under the water. Lyra, who had been clinging to her grandmother, was lost from Pauline’s grasp and ended up face down in the surf. Acting swiftly, Molly managed to scoop up the young girl and carry her back to the safety of the shore. She promptly returned to assist Pauline, helping her to her feet and guiding her out of the turbulent water.

On the beach, both Lyra and Pauline were visibly shaken and struggling to catch their breath after their ordeal. Molly led them to the nearby RNLI lifeguard unit, where she could properly check on their condition and provide reassurance. She wrapped Lyra in a blanket to help her regain warmth and composure.

Fortunately, aside from minor shock and breathlessness, neither Pauline nor Lyra required further medical attention. Before they left, Molly offered some important beach safety advice, as well as an RNLI sticker for Lyra to keep as a memento. The rescue left a strong impression on Lyra, who later returned to thank her rescuer, bringing with her a specially painted shell, which Molly in turn exchanged for a piece of sea-glass found on the beach. The light-hearted gesture was a moving end to a dramatic encounter.

Pauline later expressed her immense gratitude for the RNLI’s role in their rescue. “It’s frightening how quickly things can turn dangerous,” she said, echoing advice frequently given by lifeguards. As longstanding supporters of the RNLI, Pauline’s family already understood the charity’s vital work, but the personal nature of this experience has reinforced their commitment. “We are eternally grateful for lifeguard Molly’s intervention. Our story underscores how invaluable lifeguarded beaches are – no one expects to get into trouble.”

Lifeguard supervisor Sam Trevor praised Molly’s decisive action and reassured the public that rigorous training ensures lifeguards are always prepared to respond in emergencies. “Incidents like these reinforce the message that safety must come first at the seaside. Lifeguarded beaches are the safest places to swim or paddle.”

Lyra’s rescue serves as a potent reminder: the sea is beautiful, but never to be underestimated. Thanks to RNLI’s continuous surveillance and prompt action, this family’s day at the beach ended in relief rather than tragedy.

As the summer continues, beachgoers are urged to heed safety advice, swim only at lifeguarded locations, and always remain vigilant, even in shallow water. The RNLI’s presence, as this dramatic episode demonstrated, is not just reassuring—it can be life-saving.
