Reform UK has pulled off a shock win in a Welsh by-election, claiming a seat in an area that was deemed a “Reform-free zone” just weeks ago! This surprise victory took place in Monmouthshire, where Reform UK’s candidate, Martin John Stevens, secured the spot in the Goetre Community Council with a 37% turnout.

The Tories were hoping to snag a fourth straight victory in local elections, having already won in areas like Caerwent and Wyesham, but it wasn’t their night this time. Reform UK’s breakthrough in the village nestled between Pontypool and Abergavenny marks its first councillor in Monmouthshire, adding a fresh twist to the local political landscape.
Despite community councils usually sticking to non-partisan decisions, Reform looks at this win with optimism, treating these smaller elections as stepping stones for next year’s Welsh election. Stuart Keyte, Reform’s councillor from nearby Torfaen, noted that this victory reaffirms their growing presence, joking about the Tories’ campaign efforts and door-knocking feats.

The by-election was sparked by a councillor’s automatic disqualification due to missing meetings, and brings together representatives from Reform, Labour, and the Conservatives among the eight-member council. It’s an interesting development following the Tories’ previous win in Wyesham, especially as former Conservative Senedd member Laura Anne Jones recently switched to Reform, creating ripples of change.
On the same night, Reform also celebrated snagging a significant seat from Labour in Carmarthenshire. All eyes are undoubtedly on Nigel Farage’s party as they make their mark in the Welsh political scene. What a shift in momentum!
