Oasis fans are in the spotlight after Edinburgh council officials stirred up a storm with some “snobby” remarks. They suggested fans attending the band’s sold-out reunion tour are “old, raucous, and overweight.” Ian Murray, the Scottish Secretary, didn’t hold back, labelling these comments “classist.” What’s more, he pointed out the double standards where drinking is banned at football but not rugby events, calling it outrageous.

Even comedian Matt Forde weighed in, highlighting the council’s negative vibes towards the band’s return to Murrayfield. Forde joked that their description of Oasis fans “sounds like a full council meeting.” He also cracked about the hypocrisy of allowing all-day drinking during rugby but banning booze at football games.

What’s the fuss? Edinburgh’s council worried about security during Oasis’ tour coinciding with the Fringe, fearing rowdy crowds and “middle-aged men taking up more space.” The remarks noted “medium to high intoxication,” which sparked a tongue-in-cheek response from Liam Gallagher, who roasted the council on social media.
Despite the controversy, Edinburgh’s council leader defended their planning for big events like Oasis Live 25, praising the economic boost it offers the city and promising thorough safety measures.
With bustling events, diverse crowds, and a whole lot of character, it seems Edinburgh’s ready to embrace what Oasis fans bring to the table. Wouldn’t you agree?
