New research has stirred the pot with news that the speed of improvement in UK cancer survival rates is slowing. Experts from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, together with Cancer Research UK, have laid it out: while survival rates have indeed improved over the decades, the pace of progress is not what it used to be.

Let’s break it down: Between 2010/11 and 2015/16, the 10-year survival rate only inched up by 1.4%. In contrast, the early 2000s saw a jump of 4%! It’s not all doom and gloom, though. For some cancers, like testicular cancer, the 10-year survival rate is an impressive 97%. But for others, such as pancreatic cancer, it’s an alarming 4.3%.

What’s causing these gaps? Effective screening programmes have bolstered survival for breast, bowel, and cervical cancers, but others haven’t seen the same benefit.

🎯 What’s the plan? The Government’s working on a National Cancer Plan aimed at enhancing early diagnosis and treatment, and shortening those agonising waiting times. They’re calling for more research and new treatments to ensure every patient has a fighting chance for more time with loved ones.

Michelle Mitchell from Cancer Research UK says, “Most patients today are likelier to survive than ever before, but our progress is slowing down. The upcoming National Cancer Plan is a pivotal moment for change.”

With all eyes on the upcoming National Cancer Plan, experts urge the Government to step up with financial and political support. It’s about using data to inform action and keep the momentum going in the fight against cancer.
