Lucy Letby, serving time at Bronzefield prison for multiple infant murders, may have a glimmer of hope. Her new barrister, Mark McDonald, has stepped in with fresh determination and evidence, aiming for the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) to take another look at her case. Letby’s parents sought McDonald’s help almost a year ago, hoping to overturn her convictions. He’s now armed with what he claims is new evidence and the backing of a panel of neonatal and paediatric experts.

McDonald has been outspoken about the flaws he perceives in the prosecution’s case, citing a lack of forensic, CCTV, and witness evidence. He believes the case leaned heavily on a theory rather than solid proof. As part of his tireless effort, McDonald is not just focusing on legal avenues but also on shaping public opinion, stating the importance of public perception in cases perceived as miscarriages of justice.

Recently, three former senior staff members from the hospital where Letby worked were arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter related to baby deaths. The police are also looking into possible new charges against Letby. McDonald insists on a comprehensive public inquiry into the hospital’s alleged failings, hinting that more may lie beneath the surface.
Despite being on holiday, McDonald remains committed, frequently communicating with Letby and visiting her monthly. He claims to have invested countless hours in her defence and is determined to see it through. With the CCRC potentially re-examining the case, Letby’s future, once seemingly sealed, now holds a sliver of possibility.
