A fierce wildfire has blackened the Welsh hillside over the past three days, creating a dramatic landscape and a trail of destruction. Firefighters from multiple crews across South Wales have been battling the blaze since it was first reported in Gelligaer on Sunday. The fire has consumed around two hectares of wild grass, gorse, and hay, with several hot spots expected to burn through the night.

Residents nearby are urged to keep their windows and doors shut, while fire crews remain vigilant. Using water bowsers, ATVs, and hose reel jets, the dedicated teams continue their efforts to extinguish the flames.

This follows another recent wildfire at Three Cliffs Bay, which had sunbathers witnessing plumes of smoke at one of Wales’ most beloved beauty spots. The blaze there was contained after three hours but added to concerns as Wales grapples with its driest spell since 1976. Unusually high temperatures combined with a severe lack of rain have put parts of southeast Wales into drought conditions, according to Natural Resources Wales.

The relentless summer heatwaves have left the region’s river flows exceptionally low, compounding the risk of fires. As the community adapts to these extreme conditions, the courage and commitment of the brave firefighting crews are truly commendable. Keep safe, everyone, and stay informed!
